Electricity bills continue to inflate due to an increase in the base tariff as well as rising fuel adjustment charges. The exorbitant electricity cost recently led to an uproar in Hyderabad where the trade and business community in particular were up in arms, and had even threatened a shutdown. While domestic consumers are finding it difficult to foot the unbearable power bill, businessmen and traders are in a greater agony as they are unable to run shops and thus feed their families. The already unaffordable electricity base tariff is further subjected to sales tax, excise duty and income tax. The accumulative effect has led to a back-breaking increase of 65-80% in the power bill. We, the general public as well as small and medium enterprises, plead to the government to have mercy on us.
