SARGODHA:
During a recent meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), the DG FIA revealed 840 cases of fake degrees in a state-owned enterprise. It is a matter of great concern that fake and bogus degrees are ruling over qualified, deserving minds of the nation. This is a game of money, not merit.
Such social diseases normally erupt as a result of socio-economic injustices in society, which urges people to adopt unfair means, even for getting their legitimate rights. Institutions are selling fake degrees by charging heavy sums of money and the same degrees are being cashed to grab high profile positions at prestigious institutions. This unjust practice is one of the top drivers of stagnant growth. Corruption in every matter has become our way of life. Such immoral and unlawful tactics have taken on the status of a social custom and is considered a tool to achieve vested interests.
Virtue and morality — the core concepts of human dignity — have faded away and have instead been replaced with immorality and deception. The poison of corruption is rampant. Astoundingly, anti-corruption agencies, too, cannot claim themselves to be free from corruption. No checks on illegal and immoral practices encourage more of the same. Consequently, the whole society is automatically pushed into unavoidable and irreversible decay.
A foolproof system of checks and balances must be adopted at all levels to ensure institutional reforms. Only then will institutions be strong enough to pave the way for the development of a nation that has long been suffering.
