Allocating aid

Allocating aid

KARACHI:

In the aftermath of the devastating floods, many people were left stranded without any food or shelter. Some tried to navigate through the floodwater on their own to reach safe areas, whilst others remained sceptical of their survival with nowhere to go.

Had the flood-affected areas been planned and developed properly, much of the devastation could have been avoided. For instance, different departments could have worked collaboratively to develop infrastructure and resilience considering each area’s vulnerability to climate-related emergencies. Most affected areas already lacked adequate healthcare support because of which the sick and elderly in these areas do not have access to any form of medical assistance. Considering that many areas are already experiencing disease outbreaks, medical camps should be set up and those sending donations must include essential medicines and other essential protective equipment.

Given that many people have been engaged in relief efforts, the unregulated and unplanned downpour of aid has caused mismanagement, disproportionate distribution of aid, and eroded positive intentions. Therefore, the municipal and local administrations must take the responsibility of allocating the donations efficiently and effectively to the beleaguered people. Importantly, the relevant authorities must realise that the country needs sustainable development to avoid similar destruction and casualties in the future.
