KARACHI:
Nearly ten days have passed since the floods wreaked havoc on Swat’s infrastructure, houses, crops, etc. Unfortunately, there has been no organised distribution of food nor have there been any attempts to restore the commercial routes. The residents of upper Swat remain stuck in darkness and distress, and most are still looking for food and shelter. The nearest Lambat route has been submerged in water, but it can be restored temporarily with the help of government apparatus. However, little attention has been paid to this. Resultantly, the residents have to climb rocky mountains and walk along dangerous paths to gather food items and reach their destinations safely.
It took almost nine days to construct a temporary bridge to connect western Bahrain with the eastern side. However, the upper region of Kalam Road and many other roads are still devastated, which has impeded relief efforts. Both federal and provincial governments have ignored the plight of the residents and made no substantial effort to repair or restore commercial routes.
Most people are either running out of food or do not have any food at all. The sick and elderly do not have medicines and cannot reach the hospitals in case of an emergency. Authorities’ slow response in terms of providing relief and other necessary support has shown their lack of interest and ability in helping the people. It is high time that both federal and provincial government step up their efforts and relieve the residents of Swat of their miseries.
