Deplorable living conditions

KARACHI:

Despite being a megacity, Karachi is in deplorable shape and ranked as the fifth worst city to live in the world. Karachi was once known as the city of lights, but it couldn’t be farther away from it today. Most areas experience frequent and prolonged power outages. Despite constant protests and calls for action, K-Electric has failed to provide the residents with any relief.

The infrastructure of the city was already in a poor state and has further worsened after the recent rains. Broken pavements and potholes cause dangerous accidents and hours-long traffic jams. The uncovered and overflowing gutters further pose a risk to pedestrians and motorcyclists. The absence of sewerage cleaners and trash cans coupled with citizens’ negligent behaviour have created many vacant plots and pavements into garbage dumps. The poor sewerage and garbage management have increased pollution in the city. Karachi now ranks among the cities with one of the worst air qualities.

The poor living conditions of Karachi pose severe problems for its residents daily. It is high time that both the federal and provincial governments gave Karachi its due share and undertake a comprehensive reformation of the city so that Karachiites can heave a sigh of relief.
