KARACHI:
Recently, I visited the deputy commissioner’s office to acquire a domicile. The process should have gone smoothly had the office staff complied with the given timings, but it seemed that the staff members were running on their own schedule. People were handed tokens slowly and incoherently. Even though men and women have separate queues, everyone was queued together. Those who arrived late at the office due to traffic or other unavoidable reasons were not served at all by staff, which is unfair given the high prices of petrol and public transport.
Besides mismanagement among the staff, there was no seating area for the people. They had to either stand or sit on the floor for hours as they waited for their turns. Considering that students must have their domicile for college admissions as per government conditions, the office was inundated with students. This caused problems for those who wanted their domiciles for employment purposes.
Different times must be designated for students and job seekers. The office should have more staff members so that they can cater to as many people as possible and there should be separate windows to serve people. People should be provided with tokens online to avoid chaos. Lastly, there should be a proper seating arrangement so that people don’t have to huddle. Instead of testing people’s patience and tolerance, the process should be fast and smooth, and people should not feel exhausted afterwards.
