Dilapidated roads

Letter August 25, 2022
Dilapidated roads

KARACHI:

The heavy monsoon rains have left parts of Karachi and Sindh in dilapidated conditions. The Sindh government, particularly Chief Minister and Administrator Karachi must take urgent steps to rectify the situation and ensure urgent repair works after across the city and in other parts of Sindh.

A more efficient and cost-effective approach to repairing the roads would be to prioritise critical junctions and areas for frequent patch-based repairments instead of a complete reconstruction of roads. This approach will not require large budget allocations given the tough fiscal situation. It will also save time because the relevant departments will not require approvals or paperwork. In Karachi, it is not feasible to rebuild entire roads due to the heavy traffic flow. Thus, this will be a much faster way to ensure sufficient repair works.

Therefore, the relevant government departments must assess the situation in Karachi and other parts of the province and undertake patch-based repairs in all major areas. These measures should be undertaken urgently because the roads have become a safety hazard and are posing difficulties for the public.
