KARACHI:
Sindh is known as the gateway of Islam and the land of Sufis. The province was once famous for its hospitality and historical and cultural sites. However, today, most parts of the province are plunged into the stone age. This is evident from the undeveloped infrastructure and poor public transportation. Other problems faced by Sindh’s towns and cities include load shedding, poor sewerage system, absence of waste management, shortages of gas and potable water, etc.
After the recent rains, many villages, towns, and even cities like Larkana have been submerged in water. In Larkana, the accumulated rainwater is causing inconveniences for the residents and has paralysed normal life. Even though Larkana has always been PPP’s stronghold city, the provincial government has neglected the city’s overall development. Larkana experiences prolonged load shedding. The roads and highways are inundated with water and are rarely repaired after the rainwater is cleared out. This coupled with uncovered drains causes many dangerous accidents.
A local counsellor informed me that the municipal administration has avoided using electric motors to drain rain and sewerage water to save fuel. This shows the government’s lacklustre attitude and their overall inability to offer any form of support or relief to the people. Every year there is widespread hue and cry during the monsoon season and the government makes momentary promises. Instead of mere lip service, the provincial government must take the necessary measures to offer maximum relief and support to the people. They must put an end to the people’s miseries by repairing the roads and the sewerage system.
