KARACHI:
The heavy monsoon spell has been catastrophic for the people and the agricultural landscape. The crumbling sewerage system has doubled the woes of the people who are confined to their homes and have to undergo tremendous hardships to go outside in emergencies. The streets and roads are inundated with rain and sewerage water while the gutters are overflowing.
Despite being the second-largest city in Sindh, Hyderabad’s thoroughfares, roads, and streets are in shoddy conditions. The poor infrastructure coupled with a frail sewerage system and the absence of cleaning facilities has turned the roads into dumps. Rainwater is still accumulated on main roads with uncovered gutters, which can cause serious accidents and fatalities. People living in shelters or mud houses have suffered considerably as the flash floods have swept their homes away.
The provincial and municipal authorities have turned a blind eye to the miseries of the public. They must assume responsibility and initiate plans to clean choked gutters and rainwater should be drained to clear the roads. Also, the sewerage pipelines must be repaired or replaced with a new ones to avoid flooding and water accumulation in the future.
