KARACHI:
Around the world, financial or business hubs can be found in excellent conditions in terms of cleanliness and maintenance to ensure that the economy keeps functioning smoothly. Unfortunately, this is not true for Karachi, the I I Chundrigar Road, which is the main financial area of the city is in a deplorable state. The recent monsoon rains have damaged the road making it impossible for motorists and drivers to drive. The municipal administration and the provincial government have remained oblivious to the situation as always. They have not announced any plans to repair the road.
Repairing the road will not only ease people’s daily commute but also generate revenue for the country. However, it seems that those in positions of power are least concerned about the woes of the public or improving the country. Despite charging for parking on the Mumtaz Hassan Road, which is adjacent to the State Bank of Pakistan, the road remains in poor shape. This plunder is happening right under the nose of the State Bank and Sindh Police headquarters, yet no action has been taken.
Karachiites have long paid many taxes and charges but received little in return. One cannot help but wonder how long the authorities will fool us. We cannot pass on the broken roads, filthy public transport, garbage dumps, and deplorable sewerage system to the next generation. The government must assume responsibility and inform the public where all the taxes are spent. The deteriorating infrastructure of Karachi should be repaired urgently.
