KARACHI:
Pakistan is experiencing a severe economic crisis and the situation is coming to a head because of the emerging socio-political issues in the country. Every few weeks, the government raises the prices of fuel and other daily commodities. The public is left alone to bear the burden of the colossal bomb of inflation. In such difficult circumstances, many have little choice but to engage in criminal acts like robbery, kidnappings, etc. The police and law enforcement agencies have failed to curb criminal activities, which is adding to civil unrest and frustration among the public.
Though the economy is gradually recovering for which the government has received praise, the prices of essential items are still skyrocketing. Retailers and public transporters have taken this as an opportunity to further exploit people by charging people exorbitant rates. Rickshaws, buses, and taxis are becoming unaffordable for many. In addition, retailers create artificial shortages to charge people higher for essential items like flour, sugar, medicines, etc. Resultantly, many people have been reduced to a single meal per day.
During such dire circumstances, the government should offer some relief to the poor sections of society to prevent them from engaging in criminal acts. Also, the government should monitor and regulate the prices of essential items. All retailers and public transporters should be issued a standard price list, which they must follow. Those who are found exploiting vulnerable customers must be fined or punished. Lastly, the poor law and order situation must be addressed with the help of law enforcement agencies.
