KARACHI:
Our society is at the helm of socio-religious degeneration. People have lost moral consensus and all the social evils are rearing their ugly heads. Selfishness and greed are among the many factors responsible for our moral decline. Everyone is trying to make ends meet, but some strive for more and lose all apathy and moral sensibilities. Tolerance is widely absent from our society. Even though all societies are replete with different religious and political stakeholders, most are able to maintain social tolerance and acceptance.
In our society, religion has been used to exploit and shape people’s mindsets. This has curbed critical thinking and philosophical and innovative ideas. Religion is used to promote personal agendas and spread hate. Those with dissenting views are labelled treacherous or astray.
The rigidity in political and religious views has increased disparities and violence in society. However, the very nature of Islam is flexible as it always teaches tolerance and flexibility. There is a need to overhaul people’s mindsets and ideologies by informing them of the fundamental principles of Islam as well as promoting a culture of education and reading to eliminate social evils and promote peace and prosperity.
