KARACHI:
People seem to have been addicted to using plastic bags. Despite awareness campaigns over the years warning about the hazards of plastic bags and insisting on using cloth bags, people in general are not paying a serious attention. Shopkeepers too are not abiding by the law banning such harmful bags and are openly using them. It goes without saying that plastic bags are a grave threat to the environment as they never break down completely. According to experts, it takes a thousand years for a plastic bag to degrade in a landfill. Since people are not shirking the use of plastic bags, the relevant authorities must impose strict penalties to discourage the environment-damaging practice.
