KARACHI:
You roam about Karachi, and you will find uncovered manholes at places in what is considered to be the most modern city of the country. These manholes, without the lids, have over the years been responsible for many a death — mostly of little kids. Drug addicts and other petty thieves are believed to be the reason behind the many uncovered manholes dotting the city, as they steal the manhole lids in the dead of the night and sell them to make money to buy some food or a drug dose. Local authorities must be a serious attention to this theft and make sure that those behind it are dealt with strictly so that they think multiple times before engaging in an activity that has claimed the lives of many citizens, especially during rains when the roads and streets are submerged with water and passers-by never know that they are setting foot in an open manhole. The authorities must make it a point that the manholes should be kept covered all the times — no matter what.
