KARACHI:
The Global Gender Gap Report 2022 revealed a gender gap in almost all spheres of society including education, economic participation, health, and political empowerment. Out of the 22.8 million out-of-school children, 60% are girls. The poor literacy levels among girls have impeded women’s ability to empower and emancipate themselves. Discrimination during hiring procedures and promotional opportunities further prevent women from seeking higher education and employment.
A lack of female representation in different spheres has perpetuated gender discrimination. There are few role models for women to look up to in the political and economic spheres. Educated and empowered women can play a crucial role in societal development and progress as women will have more agency to make informed decisions about marriage, reproduction, children’s education, etc. They will participate in the labour force and improve productivity and innovation, which can accelerate economic activity.
I urge the relevant authorities to improve girls’ access to education, particularly in rural or remote areas. Also, the economic and political spheres should adopt female-friendly policies and avoid discrimination to accommodate more women. Most South Asian countries have improved significantly in closing the gender gap and experienced simultaneous growth and development. Therefore, Pakistan must also take immediate steps to improve gender parity.
