KARACHI:
In the 1980s, business intelligence (BI) was introduced as a set of methods to advance business via computerised support systems such as data-driven systems. Since then, it has gained popularity owing to its strength in optimisation ability. BI helps managers acquire high-quality data and information at all levels through systematic processes that help them attain, examine, and spread information crucial for business activity and decision-making. BI also includes tools, techniques, and solutions that help managers bridge the existing communication and information gaps between top and middle managers.
BI facilitates accumulation, methodical amalgamation, and managing of data. It provides end-users with increased processing capabilities to discover new knowledge for qualitative and quantitative analysis and forecasting. BI systems combine different tools, such as a data warehouse, which gathers detailed data from multiple sources for in-depth analysis. In contrast, online analytical processing supports research concerning products and customers. The dashboard enables users for effective representations, allowing decision-makers to figure out the key performance indicators.
To improve utilisation, BI should be flexible and must facilitate employees at all levels to handle unforeseen situations. The technological solutions furnished for both online and traditional businesses have made BI popular in the last couple of years. It has helped organisations improve their managerial practices as well as their products and services. However, BI remains a relatively new approach in business and organisation architecture. In developing countries like ours, we need to identify and assimilate hidden concepts relevant to decisions and to improve awareness of the business environment. The use of BI can support many educational and social organisations to improve the utilisation of resources and create new opportunities.
