KARACHI:
Competent and qualified teachers are a prerequisite for a strong education system, which can help further societal progress and development. Thus, teachers should receive regular training to upgrade their knowledge and skills to inculcate good values amongst students. Unfortunately, most teachers in Pakistan are not qualified or equipped with the skills to teach any level of students. In both public and private schools, most teachers resort to textbook teaching and rote learning. Consequently, students fail to develop critical
thinking and problem-solving abilities and gain little knowledge from their education.
Surveys have revealed flaws and disparities in the recruitment processes of teachers in villages, and cities. Considering that all students should be offered a standard education, teachers should be hired through fixed criteria in both rural and urban areas. All teachers must undertake written-recruitment examinations. After clearing these exams, they must undergo training to develop the required skills. Also, educational institutes must support teaching staff by providing them with all the resources that can help them improve teaching and learning. Textbooks and curricula should be regularly updated to keep pace with global changes and ensure that students have up-to-date knowledge and skills.
Importantly, the education department must invest in information technology (IT) as it has become a necessity in today’s world. All educational institutes should be equipped with IT systems and instructors who can guide students on its uses. Lastly, all teachers should be paid well so that they are motivated to do their job and facilitate students properly.
