Accountability

Letter July 06, 2022
Across the country, people have grown frustrated with the dire situation as the politicians remain engaged in their quest for power

KARACHI:

Across the country, retailers and markets have complained of lesser activity due to prolonged and frequent load-shedding. Industries have also taken a hit because power outages are affecting the manufacturing processes and increasing costs. After all, factories are running on generators. With an increase in taxes, businesses and organisations are trying to cut costs by laying off employees, which is further adding to the woes of the masses.

Prices of essential commodities are skyrocketing, and public transport fares have also risen but people’s salaries have remained unchanged. In the absence of government relief or support, people have little choice but to resort to extreme measures. Many have considered taking their children out of school to reduce expenses. Street crimes, robberies, and other illegal activities are already on the rise. Families are more likely to marry their children, particularly girls at younger ages to secure their futures. Also, more children will be forced to work to lend their families a helping hand.

Across the country, people have grown frustrated with the dire situation as the politicians remain engaged in their quest for power. Considering that all political parties have now been in power at least once, people have little hope for change or betterment after the next general elections. Instead of simply criticising parties and their leaders, people must hold them accountable. Without pressuring politicians to perform better and actively seek change, we should not expect any form of relief or change.
