Power and corruption

Authority obtained through unfair electoral tactics is then misused to further control resources and increase power

MIRPURKHAS:

The political system in Pakistan is far from being fair and transparent. It is still in the tight grip of feudal lords and capitalists. Those who possess power and resources can mold the system and manipulate people in their favour to win elections. This authority obtained through unfair electoral tactics is then misused to further control resources and increase power — a cyclical cycle that leads to more corruption and misery.

Weaker segments of society, who are always lured in through the rhetoric of ‘change’, are shamelessly left to fend for themselves as promises become hollow once elections end. Development funds are embezzled and elected representatives misuse their power to intimidate and belittle their opponents. People connected with power structures find themselves at ease in every aspect of life. Those who are proverbially ‘non-political’ in their orientation are left insecure and helpless as the elected representatives do not care for their welfare. This leads the people to doubt the overall political system and institutional machinery of the state.

If this fiasco goes on unchecked and effective accountability, irrespective of position and power, is not ensured, no change will be witnessed even after the passage of a hundred years. Reformation is necessary.
