Unending torture

KARACHI:

Earlier most localities in Karachi had a fixed schedule for load shedding of up to 1 to 2 hours daily. However, since the start of June, K-Electric (KE) has increased unscheduled load-shedding across the city without informing consumers. Some areas are now experiencing load-shedding twice within a day with an increased duration of up to 14 to 18 hours.

Load-shedding coupled with the agonising heat has become unbearable for the people. Instead of providing relief, the government has consistently raised fuel prices. Frequent power outages have disrupted daily routines and made it difficult to fulfil tasks. Retailers are experiencing a decline in activity as customers avoid visiting the markets during load-shedding hours. Other businesses have also been affected because most cannot afford to operate on generators due to high fuel prices. Students are struggling to prepare for their exams and will most likely suffer from poor academic results.

The government’s failure to resolve the load-shedding crisis has compelled people to take to the streets in protest. Road blockades and police shelling in different areas have affected vehicular traffic resulting in traffic jams. The relevant authorities should urge KE to resolve the crisis on an emergency basis as the rising unrest and deteriorating security situation are further adding to people’s problems. The Ministry of Energy should review the production of electricity and revise unit rates. Households that consume less than 500 units per month should be charged less.
