Family planning

KARACHI:

The use of family planning and birth control is crucial because it allows women to make independent and appropriate decisions concerning their health. The use of contraceptives can reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies and precarious abortions, which are major contributors to maternal deaths. The religious and cultural stigma have muted any widespread discourse on family planning because of which Pakistan has the sixth highest population in the world.

The lack of healthcare assistance and information about health problems emerging from the continuation of pregnancies has prevented people from using contraceptive methods. Also, many people are either unaware of contraceptive options or there is a misconception about their use and potential side effects. This coupled with religious convictions affects Pakistani couples’ decision to use contraception. In addition, most people want to bear more sons as it is considered a token of superiority or high status in society. Therefore, couples continue to bear children until they have a son. At times, in-laws do not support women and prevent them from using contraceptive methods despite being aware of the potential health risks. This is more common amongst unempowered or marginalised women or those in rural and remote areas where women do not have access to health facilities.

To overcome health hazards emerging from pregnancies, there is a need to improve the availability of contraceptives. Couples should be encouraged to consult medical professionals about pregnancies and family planning. Hospitals and polyclinics should be set up to provide people with easy access to healthcare support. Religious clerics and community representatives can also play an important part in raising awareness about family planning.
