Etiquettes in academia

Etiquettes in academia

KARACHI:

In academia, students are expected to demonstrate good social behaviour to establish healthy relationships with their teachers and their peers. However, students are blissfully unaware of basic academic etiquettes. I have witnessed many instances of students disrespecting or ignoring teachers, asking inappropriate questions, or even leaving class without informing. The worst possible result of lacking basic mannerisms is that teachers will no longer receive the respect they deserve.

We are aware of the fact that recent advancements in educational practices have changed almost all conventional methods. Still, manners and etiquette must remain as important as in previous generations. There has always been a fine line between teachers and students, and that is what strengthens their relationship. If students continue to break this line, I fear that such behaviour will eventually lead to moral decay in society.

At some point in the future, students will undoubtedly recall the past mistakes that they made and may positively reflect upon their behaviour, but by then it might be too late. As far as educators are concerned, they need to remind their students of how important manners and etiquettes are not just in the classroom but also in a social setting.
