KARACHI:
Civic sense refers to respecting the law and maintaining good etiquette when interacting with others. As a citizen of a metropolitan, everyone should abide by laws and ensure that their behaviour is not harming anyone. Therefore, everyone should follow the traffic rules and adhere to security measures, respect senior citizens, and maintain cleanliness and tidiness on roads and public spaces.
Unfortunately, nowadays, people blatantly disregard basic etiquette whether it is following the traffic signal or allowing people to cross the road on a zebra crossing, no one is willing to follow the rules. Everyone seems to be in a rush to reach their destination as they blare horns and overtake other cars causing havoc on the roads. Despite the presence of traffic police, many drivers continue speeding, which poses a risk to their own as well as others’ lives. Across the city, pedestrian bridges are scarce and in extremely poor conditions with missing staircases and handrails. Additionally, people dispose of garbage on the roads and most public places do not have dustbins because of which every corner of Karachi is littered. Nullahs and pavements have become dumpsites and a foul smell is always lingering in the air.
The municipal administration should install garbage cans across the city and instruct shopkeepers to keep dustbins outside their shops. Garbage/waste should be removed from the pavements to ensure a clean and hygienic environment. Also, relevant authorities should ensure that traffic signals across the city are operational and traffic police should enforce orderliness on roads.
