Worsening traffic

Letter April 22, 2022
Worsening traffic

KARACHI:

Across Lahore, traffic conditions are worsening with daily traffic jams that last for hours. To avoid the peak hour rush, citizens are compelled to leave their homes early to reach their destinations on time. However, the roads are packed with vehicles at all times of the day. It is impossible to drive in busier areas such as Ichhra bazar, Kalma Chowk, Gulberg, etc, during school or office timings. Often many signals are out of order and traffic police are not present either, which causes chaos. Hasty and careless driving on potholed roads causes several accidents daily.

The deplorable traffic situation in Lahore is paving the way for other problems such as rising noise pollution. Those living or working in busy areas are faced with constant commotion and loudness, which disrupts their routines. The constant noise causes hearing issues, headaches, etc. Also, a large number of vehicles on roads has increased carbon emissions, which is exacerbating the air quality in Lahore. This was exemplified by the intense smog earlier this year.

The provincial authorities and the municipal corporation must undertake measures to address the traffic problems. Roads must be re-modelled and widened to accommodate more vehicles. Flyovers and underpasses should be developed to ease the flow of traffic. In congested or smaller areas, vehicles should not be allowed during rush hours. Also, traffic police should be present to enforce traffic rules. Lastly, people should be encouraged to use public transport as this can help reduce both traffic congestion and carbon emissions.
