KARACHI:
In recent years, the thick layer of smog in Lahore and other cities marks the start of the winter season. In 2021, Lahore consistently ranked as the most polluted city in the world. The citizens suffered from grave problems throughout the winter season as the intense smog made it impossible for people to leave their homes. Many people suffered from eye and throat burns and rashes, severe chest congestion, and irritation in the airways – something which increases the risk of heart and lung diseases. Resultantly, hospital admissions across Lahore increased between October to January.
Despite being aware of the reasons behind smog, the authorities have done little to raise awareness or halt these practices. Brick kilns entrepreneurs should be encouraged to rebuild kilns with new brick stacking and firing techniques as this can help reduce nearly 60% of the emissions. Also, brick makers should be educated on cost-effective technology solutions for cleaner brick production, and new operating and cleaner brick firing practices. People must also be informed of the detrimental impact of the burning garbage and agricultural waste, wood, and coal in the winters.
Given that Lahore has a relatively safe and sound public transport system, citizens should be encouraged to travel via the orange line metro trains and buses. This will help reduce vehicular traffic and emissions. Individually, people can help by engaging in plantation or afforestation activities as trees absorb greenhouses gases. The smog situation across the country is expected to worsen in the coming years, therefore, everyone must act now.
