Reforming democracy

Reforming democracy

KARACHI:

The current political situation in Pakistan is at a critical juncture. Despite frictions, for the last few years, the country had remained committed to democratic principles. There was some upkeep of fundamental freedoms such as political participation and dissent. However, this changed drastically within the last few months and now the country finds itself amid political turmoil. The Constitution has been violated and democracy is under threat. Unfortunately, the layman is unable to comprehend the current situation and even the media has failed to set the course straight.

The public must be informed of the democratic process and educated on their civic rights. Without a clear understanding and agreement amongst the people over democratic values, the country will continue witnessing political crises. Also, the democratic process and political institutions must be reformed. There should be wider participation and transparency as this will ensure equality and improve representation. People should be encouraged to engage with their elected representatives and voice their concerns.

The room for dissent has become narrower and intolerance has risen. All political parties must accept a diversity of opinions and ideas. Criticism should be taken positively and used to improve policies. Different political parties and leaders should engage with each other and work for the improvement of the country. Without a large-scale change in our democratic process, little will change in the country. The politicians will continue their quest for power while the masses remain entrenched in socio-economic problems.
