KARACHI:
Quality education is a prerequisite for a prosperous and disciplined nation. Most countries witnessing growth and development today have concentrated on improving their literacy rates. Higher literacy means a more productive and innovative labour force. Pakistan’s poor literacy rate is the main reason for the country’s struggle with several social, political, and economic issues. It has impeded the country’s path toward progress and change. However, these challenges can be addressed with a pragmatic approach. The foremost thing to do is overhaul the entire education system and free it from retrogressive ideas and methodologies. The country must adopt modern teaching techniques that focus on the students.
To compete globally in a technologically driven era, it is necessary to adopt new methods. Teachers should act as guides and encourage student participation in class. Interactive activities with peers will help students develop their skills. Also, teachers should shift focus to research-based teaching by gathering and distributing a variety of study material to students. This will enhance students’ ability to absorb knowledge.
Given the high number of out-of-school children, we need to speed up efforts to draw more children towards schools and provide them with quality education. The government must expand the annual budget for the education sector and incentivise lower-income families to send children to school. Teachers should be offered training as they play a crucial role in improving the education system. Also, educational institutes must ensure that teachers have the right credentials. Modern techniques should be adopted in all public and private schools to equip students with adequate knowledge and skills. A good education system will allow the country to rid itself of ignorance and retrogression.
