KARACHI:
Around the world, most major cities boast of the latest advancements and developments. However, Pakistan’s metropolis Karachi is still struggling with poor road infrastructure that has made the lives of citizens miserable. Across the city, most roads are in dilapidated condition and unsafe to use because of which traveling to and from places has become a testing experience.
In North Nazimabad, damaged sewerage lines and overflowing drains had already damaged the roads severely, which was further worsened after they were dug up to install new pipelines. Unfortunately, however, the pipelines were never installed, and neither were the roads repaired. The absence of garbage collectors and sewerage cleaners has resulted in the roads becoming landfills. This coupled with uncovered manholes has made the roads narrower increasing traffic congestion. Pedestrians find it difficult to walk on the pathways as they struggle to navigate their way amidst the garbage and traffic chaos.
During the monsoon season, the manholes become a breeding ground for mosquitos and other bacteria. Those living nearby suffer from the constant foul smell and face the risk of diseases due to their unhygienic surroundings. In the past, authorities have paid little heed to the residents’ concerns. The poor roads are becoming a serious hassle; therefore, the relevant authorities should formulate a plan to repair the roads at their earliest.
