Climate change

KARACHI:

Research has revealed that Pakistan can face an annual economic loss of up to $3.8 billion because of climate change. Average temperatures are likely to increase above the global average and the country is faced with some of the highest disaster risk levels in the world. Some parts of the country are already witnessing drought-like conditions, which have affected farming activities and forced people to migrate. Heatwaves have become more regular, which will increase the risks of heat-related illnesses and deaths.

The effects of climate change are already becoming visible and will be catastrophic if we do not act now. Through education and innovation, we can make the necessary changes to protect the planet and reduce the loss to our country. To reduce carbon emissions, the government must strategize on improving public transport to minimise vehicular traffic and make a switch to electric vehicles. A widespread campaign must be initiated to inform people of the need to switch off appliances to save energy. People should be encouraged to reuse and recycle items as reusing will reduce consumption. Recycling can help save carbon dioxide (CO2) because the garbage/waste dumped in landfills or burnt will be reduced. Also, afforestation efforts must be speeded up by encouraging people to plant trees and avoid cutting off trees for fuelwood.

The government should integrate climate change measures into national policies; promote mechanisms for raising capacity for effective climate change-related planning and management. Also, women, youth, and marginalised communities must be included in these strategies. Although these steps may not resolve the problem entirely, they can help reduce the impact of climate change.
