Mockery of democracy

Mockery of democracy

KARACHI:

We are yet again witnessing a circus in the name of democracy by our politicians. Although they all claim to be saviours of democracy, their behaviours are anything but democratic. Democracy is not only about voting, but it also refers to a system where people have a say in how things are run. It is supposed to be a system that ensures equality, fairness, and freedom for everyone. However, in our country democracy is only used as means to gain access to power and wealth. Our politicians if successful sing praises of democracy but cry foul if they lose. While in power they forget every lesson remotely linked to democracy and only focus on self-aggrandisement and nepotism. The opposition parties have moved a no-confidence motion in the National Assembly, which is their democratic right. However, unfortunately, both the government and the opposition parties are exhibiting undemocratic behaviours. Both sides are involved in an ugly war of words and a media circus wooing people to come out on the streets.

I cannot help but wonder if any of this will lead to anything remotely linked to the betterment of the country. While both the government and the opposition are busy mudslinging each other, the allied parties are fully exploiting the situation and not coming out in favour of one or the other. With rallies being announced and threats and counter-threats being hurled, this farce does not seem democratic. In the worst of economic miseries, our politicians are concerned with personal gains and access to power while the country is moving fast toward a complete economic meltdown.
