Water crisis

Water crisis

ISLAMABAD:

Pakistan is experiencing a water shortage, which might be disastrous for the country in the near future. According to statistics, Pakistan’s yearly water availability per capita has decreased from 1,500 cubic metres to 1,017 cubic metres. The country is on the verge of exceeding the scarcity threshold and with the current rate of depletion it will soon reach the deadly level.

The Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources has expressed alarm, predicting that Pakistan could face absolute water scarcity by 2025. They explain that population expansion, inadequate water storage facilities, low system efficiency, poor management, and groundwater depletion are all contributing factors that need to be addressed. Unfortunately, the plea of citizens seems to have fallen on deaf ears and the government has failed at initiating mitigation measures.
