KARACHI:
The increasing number of street crimes and robberies in Karachi and Hyderabad, the two biggest cities of Sindh, owe to the escalating inflation, absence of government relief and lawlessness in the country. The situation further worsened during the pandemic as many people lost their jobs because of lockdowns. With the proliferating inflation and lack of employment opportunities, people from the poor and lower-middle classes have little choice but to steal from others.
The absence of adequate employment opportunities and low-paid jobs often attract the youth towards illegal acts because they can earn large amounts of money quicker as compared to a full-time job. However, committing crimes would not be as easy if such lawlessness had not been prevailing in the country. In recent years, the law enforcement agencies have failed to catch most of the culprits, let alone recover the stolen things. This negligence has emboldened the criminals to continue doing what they do without any fear. Just on the 5th day of the new year, a gruesome incident took place in Jamshoro, where six men barged into a house, held the family members captive, and stole money and gold worth 1.5 crores. Reportedly, after two days, the same group committed the same act in another house in Latifabad, Hyderabad without any fear because of the deteriorating situation of the law.
The only solution to this grave problem is that the law enforcement agencies perform their duties with utmost responsibility. Otherwise, these people will never cease committing crimes given the poor state of law and order in the country. It is high time the government took serious measures and dealt with the criminals sternly so that such incidents do not take place and the citizens can heave a sigh of relief.
