Deviant behaviour

KARACHI:

The behaviour of our youth is drastically changing and becoming a cause for concern for many. Teenagers are increasingly indulging in devious practices such as substance abuse and drug addiction, misbehaving with elders, using offensive language, etc. According to one survey, one out of every ten university and college students is a drug addict. This number is expected to further increase because many students have dropped out of education during the pandemic. Consequently, teenagers have more free time to engage in malpractices.

Aggression has become commonplace amongst the youth today. Every now and then, we come across news of fights amongst teenagers that result in violence and bloodshed. Besides that, teenagers regularly disrespect and misbehave with teachers and guardians. They refuse to follow any guidelines or values because they believe them to be regressive. Teenagers today have normalised deviant behaviour, which includes the use of abusive language. This behaviour reflects poorly on society and in the long term will be detrimental for the country at large.

Our youth has lost a sense of morality and respect for everyone. Although parents play an important role in the upbringing of children, it would be unjust to hold them solely responsible. Perhaps, our educational institutes have also failed to inculcate moral values in students and enforce good behaviour. Parents and educational institutes should collectively work towards rehabilitating the behaviour of the youth. In addition, the relevant authorities should enforce strict action against those pushing teenagers towards drug abuse. The youth of today is the future of our country; therefore, all relevant parties must focus on their good upbringing and growth.
