Rising prices

Rising prices

KARACHI:

Following the rise in petrol prices and other essential items, the Karachi Dairy Farmers Association and whole sellers also increased the price of fresh milk up to Rs140 per kilogram from Rs130. The milk retailers were already selling milk at a higher rate because the official rate was set as Rs94 per kilogram. They have continuously raised prices because of an absence of checks and regulations. After a few deputy commissioners took strict action, some retailers switched to the official rate for a short period, but they soon went back to their old practices. The authorities must take strict action against profiteers who are selling milk at exorbitant prices.

Besides milk, retailers have raised prices of several other commodities significantly. The commissioner Karachi should enforce measures to prevent retailers from increasing the prices of essential items arbitrarily. The authorities have remained oblivious to the exploitation of consumers by the retailers and other stakeholders who have enjoyed complete freedom. The rise in prices of milk and sugar also resulted in an increase in other items such as ready-made tea at tea shops, cakes, and other sweets. Even yogurt prices have increased by almost 20% of the official rate.

The provincial government and other authoritative figures need to consider this matter in earnest and order strict action against retailers exploiting consumers. It is already difficult for people to purchase essential items at the official rates, the increased prices are making the products out-of-reach for them. Also, the relevant authorities should maintain quality control of food items. Those who do not meet the quality standards and price rates should be given strict punishment.
