KARACHI:
Education improves the overall growth of an individual and enhances their prospects. Women have been endowed with exceptional abilities by nature, which they can better understand and utilise through education. Unfortunately, in Pakistan, the proportion of women in education is significantly low. In rural areas, girls do not have access to education at all. Instead, they are forced into labour or married at young ages. In many parts of the country, education is still viewed as a ‘modern’ phenomenon that can corrupt cultural values and morals. However, education is necessary for women as much as men because it enhances knowledge and understanding and raises one’s awareness of their rights and individuality.
All developed countries have encouraged and endorsed education for women, which is why many of these societies are progressive today. It is necessary that education for women is promoted with the same vigour in Pakistan as well because an educated woman is an empowered woman. Educated women will contribute to society in several ways. They will enter the labour market for work and increase economic output. In addition, educated women will be more informed of their rights and will make better decisions with regard to reproduction and family planning and raise better children. In turn, the overall growth and development of society will be improved.
Article 37 of the Constitution ensures education as a right of every woman. As a society, everyone must make a conscious effort to improve the educational prospects of women. The government must undertake initiatives and policies to ensure that girls across the country have access to education.
