Government performance

KARACHI:

When Imran Khan first assumed the position of Prime Minister, he was adamant on a policy of ‘zero tolerance for corruption’ and improved living conditions for the masses. However, within the last few months, inflation has risen considerably, unemployment is rising and rising, and corruption is still rampant in the country.

The recent hike in fuel prices coupled with an increase in prices of basic commodities has made it impossible for many to afford essential items and pushed lower-income families towards poverty and starvation. It is an indisputable fact that inflation has struck all countries around the world, but it is more challenging for the Pakistani population because the daily wages are extremely low. Low-income households with a single breadwinner will not be able to bear the brunt of the upcoming price hikes. In the last three years, inflation has almost tripled, and the value of the Pakistani rupee has depreciated amongst major currencies. Substantial import of raw materials and other essential items has contributed to the rising prices.

The masses are now running out of patience over the government’s failure to reform the country and tackle the prevailing crises. Despite repeated changes in several ministries, the country remains in dire straits. It is time for the government to consider the crises in earnest and implement steps to address the people’s woes. Prices of basic commodities must be regulated, and these items should be subsidised. There should be a crackdown on the black market to ensure people are not being exploited. Exports must be expanded, and imports reduced. The incumbent government must review its performance and enact effective policies promptly.
