KARACHI:
The much-anticipated CSS screening test was held earlier this week prior to the written test. The rationale behind introducing a screening test was to enable problem-solving and analytical abilities in the candidates. Unlike written examinations, these tests would be easier to check and save time by eliminating non-serious or unprepared candidates.
I find the testing method inadequate because many students feel more pressured during multiple choice question (MCQ) tests. Candidates are likely to get confused between the answer choices and may select incorrect answers because of limited time. Such tests do not allow candidates to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of subject matters and award them with lesser marks.
The elimination of students during the screening tests puts the future of the nation at stake because the bureaucracy will be deprived of worthy candidates if they underperform in the test. Also, it will be strenuous for students to prepare for two separate forms of test, they may be thrown into confusion and lose focus. By the time candidates are equipped to comprehend the screening tests, they may not have the time to undertake it. I would urge the candidates to raise this issue with the relevant authorities and persuade them to rescind the decision to undertake screening tests.
