KARACHI:
Upon their success in Afghanistan, the Taliban claimed to restore peace and stability in the country. They also declared that they would form an inclusive and representative government. However, earlier this month, the Taliban announced the new Afghan cabinet, which was far from inclusive. In addition, they banned girls from returning to secondary school. These actions demonstrate that the Taliban have once again failed to keep their word and have resorted to their regressive policies.
According to Prime Minister Imran Khan, there is an increased likelihood of a civil war if the Taliban fail to form an inclusive government. An inclusive and representative government is necessary to maintain peace and stability in the country and the region. However, the Taliban have ignored their promises to the world and enforced repressive policies since their takeover. The international community needs to urge the Taliban to form an inclusive government and protect the rights of Afghan citizens. Otherwise, there is an increased risk of a civil war in the country, which will pose serious challenges for the regional countries as well as the international community.
