Great poet

Letter September 25, 2021
Many of Latif’s ideas have been witnessed in Western philosophies centuries later

KARACHI:

On the 278th death anniversary of Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, many people across the province of Sindh paid tribute to one of the greatest poets in the world. Shah Abdul Latif’s poetry is an example of harmony, tolerance and peace. He conveyed many ideas with his poetry including the love for humanity, spirit of faithfulness, courage and devotion. He is often labelled as a symbol of love and peace. Although Shah Latif was from many centuries ago, his writing has proven his high regard for women.

Many of Latif’s ideas have been witnessed in Western philosophies centuries later. His work is timeless that will continue to interest and inspire many for years to come. One of his more remarkable works is Shah Jo Risalo, which is a compilation of his poetry. It is a must-read for those studying philosophy and humanities. His books have been translated into several languages to reach everyone around the world.

Every year, Urs celebrations take place on his death anniversary to commemorate him. The Urs involves poetry recital, literary conference and other cultural activities. Unfortunately, this year the celebration could not take place due to the risk of Covid-19. However, people must honour Shah Abdul Latif every day and not just on his death anniversary. It is a shame that many people today are oblivious to his work. Educational institutes should utilise his literary work in curriculums to increase awareness amongst students. We must take pride in our legends and honour them the same way as other countries do.
