KARACHI:
Hundreds of motorbikes hit the roads of Karachi every day. This has had a deteriorating impact on the traffic conditions in the metropolis. An absence of a proper public transport system such as public buses and trams has resulted in an increase in the purchase of motorbikes. Locally produced motorbikes are a cheap option for most middle-income earners. Almost everyone in Karachi has at least one motorbike.
However, the ever-increasing motorbikes, a lack of traffic management system, and an absence of road sense have wreaked havoc on the roads. If not dealt with effectively, this will result in traffic chaos for the city. Motorcyclists pose a threat to other vehicles as well as pedestrians by constantly ignoring traffic signals. The zebra crossing of any road is packed with motorbikes. Every day at least one motorbike accident is reported, having taken place because of the motorcyclist’s careless driving.
In addition, the creation of underpasses and flyovers has further worsened traffic conditions. Instead of offering extra space to vehicles, they have led to increased traffic jams due to the absence of traffic signals. I request the relevant authorities to consider the deteriorating traffic system of Karachi and enforce measures to address it. Strict traffic laws and regulations must be imposed to ensure easy travel and the safety of all citizens. In addition, the city requires an effective public transport system to cut down on motorbikes and other shoddy vehicles such as rickshaws.
