Protecting cultural heritage

Letter September 14, 2021
Protection and conservation of these sites is important in order to protect a sense of identity amongst the people

KARACHI:

Countries around the world have preserved heritage and archaeological sites to honour their histories, cultures, and traditions. However, in Pakistan, these sites are in a dire state. It was recently revealed that important sites are gradually being demolished and destroyed. For instance, Pakka Qila in Hyderabad, Kot Digi Fort near Khairpur, and other valuable archaeological sites of Sindh have been destroyed and encroached by influential groups. Moreover, majority of archaeological sites in Sindh have been subjected to lawlessness. These sites have long been occupied by mafias. The society of archaeology has condemned the mafia and demanded that pragmatic measures be taken against them. Considering the importance of preserving the history and heritage of Sindh, these sites and artefacts need to be protected. Although Pakistan has received funding for this purpose, the people have continued to destroy these places by polluting them and illegally occupying them. Despite several calls for action against mafias, little has been done.

Protection and conservation of these sites is important in order to protect a sense of identity amongst the people. Historical sites are a reminder of the history and struggles of our ancestors. In addition, these sites serve as a means for tourism. As responsible members of the society, we request the respected Chief Minister of Sindh and the concerned minister to take pragmatic and stern measures to save our cultural heritage.
