Feminism and the West

Letter September 05, 2021
Feminism and the West

LAHORE:

This is with reference to the letter ‘Feminism and the West’ published in your newspaper on 2 September. I would like to respectfully disagree with the notion that culture and tradition can be used as an excuse to justify oppression. Female genital mutilation may be considered traditional in certain regions of Africa but it cannot be justified. Similarly, if our culture has oppressive values then we should have an open mind to evaluate them critically rather than becoming defensive about tradition. The important point is to have the freedom of thought and action for women. A civilised and decent society ought to give women the space to choose their own paths.
