Drug abuse

Letter August 21, 2021
The government needs to take strict measures to limit and control all forms of drug trade and trafficking

KARACHI:

Despite a ban on narcotics and drug-laced candies, many such items are still being trafficked with impunity in all parts of Sindh. These nocuous commodities are available everywhere, making it easier for even children to buy them. Due to a lack of laws, regulations, and inaction of relevant authorities, drug trafficking is rampant in the province. It is ruining the future of our younger generation, as well as, increasing the rate of lethal diseases such as necrotising fasciitis, HIV infection, hepatitis B and C, post-traumatic stress disorder, tuberculosis, malnutrition, cardiac problems, cellulitis, urinary tract infections, and etc. According to the United Nations Office on Drug and Crimes, approximately 8 to 9 million people are addicted to drugs in Pakistan. A local media source reported that 700 people die every day due to drug-related complications in Pakistan. Drug addicts are surging devastatingly at an annual rate of 40,000. The menace of drugs is prevalent in all parts of society. Even educational institutes are not exempt from it.

The government needs to take strict measures to limit and control all forms of drug trade and trafficking. Those involved in the cultivation, production, or possession of drugs should be given strong punishments. Regular awareness campaigns should be carried out to inform people about drug abuse and prevention methods. These campaigns should be transmitted through electronic, print, and social media. Educational institutes should hold seminars to engage with students and inform them. Similarly, clerics should mention addiction in relation to Islam in their Friday sermons. Parents should also bond with their children and ensure they are not hiding any activities from them. We need to address this pressing issue urgently before it spirals out of control.
