KARACHI:
In the last few days, the situation in Afghanistan has panned out to be an extremely deteriorating and chaotic one. Thousands of civilians have fled the country as the Taliban seized control. Many countries across the world announced plans to offer asylum to the fleeing citizens and opened borders. Pakistan also reopened the Chaman border to patients seeking medical services. Whilst these efforts are commendable, they are simply not enough. Out of the 39 million citizens of Afghanistan, only a quarter of the people will be successful in seeking asylum in different countries. Much of the population will remain at the mercy of the Taliban.
In a news conference, Taliban spokesperson Zabiullah Mujahid promised media freedom, women’s rights, and offered amnesty to government officials. He also expressed the Taliban’s interest in forming peaceful relations with other countries. Regional countries should take this as an opportunity to negotiate with the Taliban and ensure peacekeeping within the region. Pakistan, as well as other countries, should reach a mutually conclusive agreement that holds the Taliban accountable for keeping their word not just right now but in the future as well.
