KARACHI:
Sending mails and packages through the Pakistan Post is considered as a cheap and easy alternative as compared to private postal services. However, despite being the largest postal operator in the country — with 49,502 employees that operate through a vehicle fleet of 5,000 — their performance has steadily declined over the years.
The Pakistan Post claims to provide a universal postal service network in line with the policies of the Universal Postal Union, a specialised agency of the UN, in order to “ensure the secure and timely delivery of mail, money and materials at an affordable price”. Contrary to these claims, my personal experience shows that the performance of our postal service is extremely disappointing. I recently conducted an experiment to test their performance and efficiency. I posted an ordinary letter to my own address and dropped it off at the Saddar General Post Office in Karachi on 17 June. Regrettably, the letter reached back to me after an entire month.
