KARACHI:
August is the month of hope and happiness for all Pakistanis because we gained our independence on 14th August, 1947. In his address to the members of the Constituent Assembly on 11th August, 1948, the Quaid stressed the need to craft a constitution that would uphold the democratic rights of every citizen and ensure freedom for all regardless of their beliefs. He emphasised that all citizens are to be treated as equals, and the rights of minorities be protected under law.
Unfortunately, the Quaid did not live long to see his dream of a democratic and inclusive Pakistan come true. After his death, the country rapidly fell into the hands of selfish leaders who corrupted the system to satisfy their lust for power and money. The goal of framing the constitution and strengthening democracy went on the back burner. The corridors of power fell prey to conspiracies where selfish leaders would do anything for personal gains. Instead of working for the people and ensuring that the country moved on the path of progress, the leaders were busy conspiring and putting down their opponents. This divided the nation, sowed the seeds of hatred, and weakened the economy. The country fell into a vicious debt trap which further exacerbated the problem. Intolerance and hatred fanned by those in power — be it the politicians, religious leaders or dictators — divided the nation. People were no longer safe in the country. The deteriorating law and order situation coupled with an ailing economy created a downward spiral for the country. Instead of realising the gravity of the problem, those at the helm kept blaming each other for the worsening situation. This ugly game of blame and counter blame continues to date.
August should be a month that reminds us why Pakistan was created. It is time to introspect and realise that we must work together for the betterment of the country. I sincerely hope that our leadership mends their ways.
