Muharram responsibilities

Letter August 12, 2021
The month of Muharram requires people to be united against all evils and wrongdoings

KARACHI:

In the month of Muharram, majalis are organised and processions taken out throughout Pakistan to pay tribute to Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions for giving their lives to forge the path of truth. These religious events are attended by all mourners and grievers alike, regardless of their religious inclinations.

It is the job of the district government to ensure that cities are adequately equipped for mourning processions. They must make sure that there are functioning streetlights, garbage disposal bins and other essential facilities in order to avoid any inconvenience. In the past, we have seen the police department do a commendable job in maintaining safety and security during this month of grief. However, security needs to be ramped up this year, especially with the Taliban making headway in Afghanistan. A spillover into Pakistan could yield devastating results. The government must deploy more security officials and remain extra vigilant during processions.

The month of Muharram requires people to be united against all evils and wrongdoings. The Ulema and zakireen should focus on raising awareness about the importance of education, good governance, research, and one’s responsibilities towards their family as well as their community. I believe that the month of Muharram teaches everyone to be more responsible, dutiful and proactive.
