China and the US

Letter August 08, 2021
China and the US

KARACHI:

The competition between China and the US is expected to be enhanced in the post-Covid world. This competition will impact both the interests of the two countries as well as the overall peace and stability of the entire world. China and the US are dependent on one another, their interests are intertwined. China is an important force in helping the US tide over difficulties and collectively resolve international problems. For example, in 2005, China assisted the US by providing aid to combat the effects of hurricane Katrina. In 2014, both countries jointly helped combat the Ebola in Africa. More recently, China provided the US with large amounts of supplies such as masks and protective suits to fight Covid-19. The data shared by China with regard to the pandemic was well-received by the US administration.

The two countries have also issued three joint climate change statements, which promoted the successful signing of the Paris Agreement. It is hoped that both countries continue to cooperate with one another in order to help the world emerge from the haze of the deadly pandemic. If the US continues to pursue diplomatic isolation against China, it will destroy not only their relationship with the second-most powerful country in the world but also their reputation as a superpower. The two countries must try to build a community that is conducive to the healthy development of the world economy. However, if the US continues with the same approach, China may withdraw its investment and transfer it to Europe and other regions.
