India’s options

Letter August 06, 2021
India’s options

KARACHI:

The quick withdrawal of the US troops from Afghanistan has once again raised concerns in the international community. There is now the awry feeling that the Taliban might take over Kabul. Days after the withdrawal was announced, the Taliban rapidly seized control of different parts of Afghanistan. Their rampant expansion has sent tremors through the region leaving a great level of uncertainty. The withdrawal is of immense significance to Indian policymakers as well because any prospect of peace has now ended in a deadlock, which has increased geopolitical uncertainty in the region. India’s limited influence in Afghanistan, the latter’s direct linkage with India’s internal security situation, and Pakistan’s influence over the Taliban are all factors at play. A major concern for India is that instability in Afghanistan can spill over in Kashmir where it has been engaged for the last 30 years. India is also concerned that Pakistan can have an upper hand in Afghanistan because of its longstanding relations with the Taliban. India is now faced with a challenging situation that can potentially harm its security and economic interests. It can no longer seek US assistance to ensure stability in the region.

India’s objectives in Afghanistan include an expansion of influence in Afghanistan, and political and economic collaboration to win support against Pakistan. India’s interests lie in its desire for political, military, and economic hegemony in the region. However, Pakistan is prepared to confront any challenges posed by them.
