KARACHI:
This is with reference to the letter “Femicide in Pakistan” published in your newspaper on July 28. Recently, in another interview for PBS, an American public broadcaster and television programme distributor, PM Imran Khan once again took a problematic stance while clarifying his earlier statements on the subject.
He categorically said that despite the fact that a woman is being “provocative”, the responsibility lies solely on them. He went on to say that purdah is for both men and women where the point is to “lower the temptation” of individuals in society. His narrative continues to revolve around this aspect when he should really be talking about enforcing laws to deal with this situation as a crime, just like he would with any other crime. So long as the people remain confident that they can get away after committing a crime, they will continue to spread violence against women. Everyone else remain apathetic silent spectators.
